Coach Melissa Peng graduated from New York University majoring in Sports Management with a concentration in events. Coach Melissa is a San Diego native who played basketball all four years at Westview High School and was co-captain on the varsity team her senior year. While at Westview, her team made 3 CIF Finals appearances and won CIF her senior year as well as placed 8th in State with Coach Abbey. After high school, she pursued her basketball career and played at New York University in New York City, New York. There, she made the NCAA tournament both her junior and senior year playing 30+ mins as the starting point guard.
Coach Abbey Cavendish is a 6th grade STEM teacher at Design39Campus. She graduated from Chapman University in 2015 and then moved back to San Diego where she started teaching and coaching for the Nighthawks Club Basketball program. Abbey played basketball in her youth and was Varsity Basketball Captain at Westview High School. During her senior year, Abbey tore her ACL and meniscus in her knee, ending her basketball career. However, she continues to share her love of the sport through coaching for the Nighthawks!
Coach Denise White is currently on her last year at SDSU for her bachelor's degree in journalism with an emphasis in advertising. Coach Denise played for Westview high school all 4 years, with 2 years on JV and 2 years on varsity. After high school Denise went to San Diego Mesa College and was co-captain both years and went undefeated her second year. Denise was offered a partial scholarship to play NCAA D2 basketball in Augusta, Georgia for Paine College. Denise came back to San Diego after a year and started coaching at Mira Mesa High school for 1 year before the program was cut. Denise then started working for an after school program called One on One Basketball that taught the basics of basketball for grades K-5. Denise joined the Del Norte program last year in February, helping Coach Cathy Shea with her teams. Denise first started playing basketball in 4th grade and still has a passion for the sport. Denise loves inspiring younger players, making them better athletes and teaching them that with hard work, anything is possible!
