3rd Grade Boys; Paul Huang -
Coach Paul Huang has been a volunteer and assisted the Nighthawk Youth Basketball Club at the third and fourth grade levels for the past two years. Paul encourages boys to focus on fundamental skills, footwork, sportsmanship, and diligence. While growing up in southeast Asia, Paul had played at varsity basketball levels throughout the high school years. Outside of coaching, Paul is a technologist solving the latest 5G challenges ; studies sneakers performance ; follows NCAA & NBA highlights ; embraces the SoCal melting pot cultures and international food. Paul is also involved with the early childhood Montessori education for kids at the local community. In addition to executing basketball plays and strategies, Paul puts emphasis on the situation awareness on the court, guiding the young minds to make wise decisions. Paul is looking forward to the dedication and the growth of the Nighthawk family!
4th & 5th Grade Boys; Jeff Lyles - Coach Jeff Lyles enters his 3rd year with the Nighthawk Youth Basketball Club. Jeff is an avid sports fan and has always enjoyed being a student to any game as much as he has loved playing. Jeff excelled in baseball during high school, ultimately walking on at UC Berkeley, but has always had a deep passion for basketball. He and his family moved to San Diego in 2013 and shortly after, he began coaching his two older sons at the rec level, down the road at the 4S Ranch Boys and Girls Club. His enthusiasm for coaching is what brought him to Del Norte and he's excelled since his arrival. He's coached at the 3rd - 5th grade levels and has a very simple philosophy to commit to improving yourself, every single time you step on the court. His goal is to help enable every athlete to play with that mindset. During his free time, Jeff loves competing in endurance races and triathlons and still mixes it up in some of the local men's basketball leagues.
6th Grade Boys; Garrett Galvin - Coach Garrett Galvin is a first-year coach with the Nighthawk Youth Basketball Club. Garrett brings a wide range of experience not only as a player but as a personal coach. Garrett is a former 3-year varsity player from Torrey Pines High School where he was a starting guard on the CIF Championship team and was named tournament MVP. Garrett continued his basketball career at the University of California, Berkley (PAC-12 Conference) where he played under Coach Mike Montgomery who won over 500 NCAA games. After Garrett’s short stint at Cal., he went on to play professionally overseas in Belfast, Northern Ireland averaging 36 MPG: 15.5 points, 8 RPG, 5 APG on 55% FG and 33% 3FG. Currently Garrett is working out worth NBA G-league player and LA Clippers Summer league player, Jordan Matthews and former Golden State Warriors Summer League and Top league Belgium Player (Limburg United), Joe Rahon. Garrett is very excited to start coaching at the club level as he pursues his dreams of coaching and influencing youth athletes at all grade levels.
8th Grade Boys; James Shertz - Coach James Shertz has coached youth basketball for the past 9 years. He has coached all ages of youth basketball from 4th to 8th grade for the Nighthawks Youth Basketball Club. He also has coached top youth teams and worked at youth camps for the Top Gun Basketball Academy and Sabres Basketball. Every summer, James works at the Del Norte Nighthawks Youth Summer Camp. James’ accomplishments as a coach has been winning multiple championships at ThriveSD and Top Gun Leagues in the 8th grade division. James also began coaching High School basketball in 2010 as the DNHS freshman coach from 2010-2012 where he won the Fallbrook Classic Tournament and led his team to a 1 loss season. In 2012 he took over the position of JV coach. He was there from 2012-2014. In 2014 he became an assistant at the varsity level, where he still currently serves on the DNHS basketball coaching staff. James played High School Basketball at Rancho Bernardo High School. He was a 2-year varsity player from 2005-2007. His Senior year at Rancho Bernardo, James was named team Captain of the Rancho Bernardo High School's basketball team. James was named to the All Palomar League Second Team and was also voted Offensive Player of the Year at Rancho Bernardo two years in a row. Following High School, James played 1 year at a Massanutten Military Academy prep school in Virginia. While attending Massanutten Military Academy, James received an award for Highest GPA and The Leadership award. James received his bachelor’s degree from Cal State University San Marcos in 2013. He was a kinesiology major with the focus of pre-physical therapy. Outside of basketball, James is a certified personal trainer for youth athletes at RedLine Athletics in 4S. He is also a group fitness trainer at The Camp Transformation Center, which is a HIIT training facility in Temecula. James has his NASM and SPS personal training certifications. In James' free time, he enjoys being in the gym working out and spending as much time as possible outdoors with his 6-year-old Siberia Husky Lobo.
8th Grade Boys; Michael Koshi - Coach Michael Koshi enters his 4th year with the Nighthawk Youth Basketball Club. Michael
was a 3-year varsity basketball player for South Torrance High School (MVP his
freshman year). Michael has been coaching youth basketball working with
Kindergarten as well as the Nighthawks program from the 5th through 7th grades.
As a club coach, Michael has won championships in the 5th, 6th and 7th grades
in both the SD Sol and Top Gun/Thrive leagues. The record for his most recent
championship teams were 10-0 and 10-1.
Michael believes in teaching the boys the proper fundamentals and
instilling an attitude to never give up and to give 100% effort every time they
step into the court. Michael believes in having them being able to
recognize what the other teams are doing on defense and offense and react
accordingly. During his free time Michael enjoys working out regularly and
playing basketball and volleyball competitively.
5/6th & 7/8th Grade Girls; Mallie Green - Coach Mallie Green graduated from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles where she majored in Health and Human Sciences. Mallie wants to continue her education to get a masters in Exercise Physiology and a doctorate in Physical Therapy. Mallie resides in San Diego and graduated from Del Norte High School in 2015 where she played varsity basketball for three years. During her senior year at Del Norte, Mallie was the co-captain of the team, received the end of the year nighthawk reward, was named the top rebounder in the San Diego County, and had an article written about her after a battle of a game to defeat Poway High School. Mallie has spent most of her summers since her freshman year at Del Norte coaching summer camps and assistant coaching for Del Norte’s girls varsity and junior varsity basketball teams. Mallie is happy to be back and to continue to grow the program.
5/6th & 7/8th Grade Girls; Saylor Fox - Coach Saylor Fox graduated from Clemson University in 2009 with a Secondary Education - History Degree. Saylor is originally from Columbia, SC where he played basketball and ran track and field all four years at Chapin High School. He was named co-captain of both teams his senior year and received All-Region and All-Upper State Honors in both sports. After high school he pursued his basketball career by attending a Div.-III program at Roanoke College in Virginia. After his freshman year, he transferred to Clemson University and became a student manager/scout team member for the Men's and Women's Clemson Basketball Programs. After college, Saylor taught social science and served as an assistant boys basketball coach at Dutch Fork High School in Columbia, SC for 4 years. He was then named the head girls basketball coach at Mauldin High School in Greenville, SC where he continued to coach and teach for an additional 4 years. While at Mauldin, his team compiled 55 wins in 4 seasons, were conference runners-up in 2014, finished top-3 in 2015, 2016, & 2017 seasons, was a 4-time state playoff qualifier, coached 9 All-Region II-4A Players, 5-All County Players, 3 All-State Players, and 5 collegiate players. In 2017, he coached Del Norte’s JV Basketball Team to a 23-4 record. Saylor was named Head Girls Varsity Coach at Del Norte High School the summer of 2018. In his first season at Del Norte, the team accumulated 16 wins, ranked as high as #2 in Div-II Rankings, advanced to the Div-II Quarterfinals, and finished Top-25 overall in San Diego County. He is married to his wife Chelsea Fox and has a 2 year old son named Waylon.
